Sustainability and the U.S. Dietary Guidelines

It is a shame that this has not been covered by mainstream media: for the first time, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee will be considering food system sustainability when drafting the updated (2015) recommendations. Several studies, including one published a couple of weeks ago, have found that the current, meat-centric Dietary Guidelines are not sustainable, and, perhaps more tenable, that reducing food waste at the retailer/consumer level can significantly improve carbon footprints. Here’s hoping that industry lobbying does not undermine necessarily “radical” U.S. policy changes, which have the potential to improve both human and environmental health.
